How do Tai Chi and Qigong work?
There are many research and anecdotal evidences available today to explain and help us understand how Tai Chi and Qigong work. One of the main themes takes us into Traditional Chinese Medicine which suggests each one of us possesses an 'energy' (Chi or Qi - pronounced "chee") system in addition to such systems as respiratory, vascular etc. As with these systems, the aim is to keep this energy system in good working order and balanced. From here an explanation may continue with the view that Tai Chi and Qigong work on four levels - physical, mental, emotional and spiritual - and they may be summarised as follows.
Physical
The forms, exercises and sequences of Tai Chi and Qigong provide a form of low impact aerobic exercise that stretches the muscles, tendons and ligaments, massages the internal organs, stimulates metabolism, activates the energy meridians and encourages the smooth flow of bodily fluids and Qi. Performed slowly, in a relaxed manner and with straightforward breath co-ordination, also allows the release and avoidance of tension and discomfort. Physically, we can then benefit in a restoring, revitalising and therapeutic way. Also, exercise improves the mental and physical performance of the brain.
Mental
This manner of exercise and the co-ordination of breath with movement, has the effect of calming the mind releasing us from an excess of mental activity that tends to run our everyday existence. The mind becomes quiet, clear and focused helping us to be 'present' often producing a meditative quality. Indeed, Tai Chi is often referred to as 'moving meditation'.
Emotional
The effects of the physical activity and calming of the mind may set-up the possibility for the release of deep-seated emotions. A release from feelings of fear, grief and even excessive joy may be experienced leaving us more emotionally balanced and stable.
Spiritual
An often neglected aspect of Tai Chi and Qigong is what they can do for us spiritually. This is not in a religious sense but rather one of disposition. Are we at peace, content, in good humour and with a 'light in our eyes' or are we down, withdrawn and agitated? Tai Chi and Qigong can lift the spirit.
Explanations apart, many practitioners are not overly concerned with the 'why' and 'how' - they just do it and enjoy the experience and benefits. There is a lot to recommend this!
